|Mouthwash is an important part of a good oral hygiene regimen. For healthy teeth, you should brush at least twice a day, floss daily and rinse with mouthwash. Mouthwash helps to remove germs and kill bacteria that brushing and flossing can't reach.
Many mouthwashes are formulated with alcohol. There are also varieties without. Both are effective at what they do, but there are several arguments saying that alcohol-free is actually better.
When you brush your teeth, you may scrape your gums. Even if you don't, you might get a cut in your mouth from food or bite your tongue or cheek. No matter what kind of injury you might have on the inside of your mouth, a mouthwash with alcohol can cause a painful burning. With alcohol-free mouthwash, you are spared from this problem.
No Dry MouthSaliva is your mouth's natural defense against bacteria. Not only does it wash harmful bacteria out of your mouth, it contains the proteins necessary to destroy it. The alcohol present in mouthwash can cause dry mouth, actually creating an environment conducive to bacterial growth.
Safe for Everyone to Use
There are certain people who should not use mouthwash with alcohol. Children are one such group. Others include people with certain medical conditions such as diabetes. Alcohol-free varieties are safe for everyone to use (children should still be monitored, to make sure they don't ingest it).
Maintain Proper Oral HygieneMouthwash alone is not enough to properly clean your mouth. It can kill bacteria, but it cannot remove plaque and stuck food particles that bacteria like to feast upon. You should always brush and floss every day and see your dentist twice a year.
